Orthobiologics as a complement to surgery
Biological products applied during surgery to support the healing of the rotator cuff, cartilage and other repaired tissues.
- What it is
- During a rotator cuff repair, cartilage surgery or a ligament reconstruction, platelet concentrates, autologous fibrin or other orthobiologic products can be applied to the repaired tissue, with the aim of improving the biological environment for healing.
- When it is indicated
- In selected patients with factors that make healing harder, such as large or chronic rotator cuff tears, poor-quality tissue or cartilage lesions. The decision is made when planning the surgery.
- How it is performed
- The product is prepared from the patient's own blood or tissues in the same operation and applied arthroscopically at the repair site.
- Recovery
- It follows the protocol of the main procedure. Orthobiologics do not by themselves shorten healing times, but aim to improve the quality of healing.
